With the roll out of High Definition (HD) services has come the requirement to support subtitling in HD. There are many transmission formats for subtitling not all of which will be supported in HD.
When it comes to transmitting subtitles for HD services there are five different formats to consider:
·Open (burnt-in or in-vision) subtitles on tape - More Info Here ·Open in uncompressed video (HD-SDI) - More Info Here · Open in compressed video (MPEG) - More Info Here ·Teletext subtitles as part of the VANC data ·Teletext subtitles as part of the DVB stream to the ETS 300-472 standard - More Info Here · DVB bitmapped subtitles - now supported in the ETS300 743 V1.3.1 standard - More Info Here · Imitext subtitles - More Info Here · Closed captions (Line21) to the EIA-708 standard - More Info Here
All of these formats except for Imitext will support HD video. For new systems designs the European Union recommends DVB bitmap subtitles for all HD services.
