The Polistream family of products offers a full range of single and multi channel solutions for transcoding between subtitling formats. It is often a requirement to convert between subtitle formats in the transmission chain. For a grid of all possible conversions Click Here
There are many situations where a broadcaster may want to transcode subtitle data. For example:
- To support simulcast of analogue and digital services Teletext subtitles are converted to DVB bitmapped subtitles. See diagram here.
- To support a pass through feed containing legacy Imitext or SCTE-27 subtitles on a new DVB cable service. The Imitext or SCTE-27 subtitles need to be transcoded to DVB bitmapped subtitles. See diagram here
- To support separate sites for playout and encoding. Often the output from a playout center will be an SDI or HD-SDI signal on a fibre link. All program content including subtitles needs to be contained in the one signal. At the encoding/uplink site this signal is encoded but if the final subtitle format is DVB, Imitext or SCTE-27 then the data contained in the signal must be extracted and converted before insertion into the output transport stream. - To repurpose material produced with US style (EIA608 or EIA708) closed captions for the Australian or European market the Closed captions need to be converted to Teletext Subtitles. See diagram here
- Where a broadcast signal is converted from Mpeg-2 to Mpeg-4 the recoding introduces a delay in the signal path. To compensate for this the subtitle data will need to be delayed to match.See diagram here .
Polistream can implement pass-through and transcoded channels as part of a multi-channel system or as individual single channel units.
