Overview of Poliscript Subtitle Preparation


Subtitle preparation is the process of creating subtitle text and timing information to match a video program. Subtitle preparation is generally carried out by trained professional translators or subtitlers on dedicated PC based Subtitle Preparation workstations. Subtitle preparation can also include live subtitling for news and sports channels.

Off-line subtitle file authoring

Subtitle files are created based on video files or tapes. This process takes anything between four and ten hours for each hour of video depending on content and any language translation required.

  3D subtitle authoring Creating subtitles for 3D introduces a range of unique challenges so new tools and techniques are required in addition the existing needs for 2D media.

Video handling for subtitle preparation

When creating subtitles it is vital that the source video is clear with good audio and the correct timecode. To save disk space and download bandwidth a lower resolution 'browse' copy is created.

Graphics keyers and VBI inserters for tape mastering 

Once created subtitles are often delivered on a master tape added to the original video. It is vital that the quality of the video is not degraded in this process so a good quality keyer is required. Subtitles can be added in picture (burnt-in) to SD or HD or as Teletext subtitles added to the VBI portion of the video in SD.

Once created subtitles are now often delivered as part of a master video file instead of on tape. Subtitles can be added in picture (burnt-in) to SD or HD or as Teletext subtitles added tot he VBI portion of the video in SD. There are a very wide range of video file formats in the market that needs to be supported.
